'It is a celebration of our love, of our life together. Of all the the amazing people we met and the fact that we can express all our ideas through photography, through digital manipulation has been endlessly inspiring.'
- Inez & Vinoodh
The Kunstmuseum Den Haag proudly presents Can Love Be a Photograph, a major retrospective celebrating the 40-year career of legendary Dutch-born photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.
This monumental exhibition reflects the artists’ shared life and creative partnership since 1986. As pioneers of digital image-making, Inez & Vinoodh occupy a singular position at the intersection of fashion and art, continuously pushing the boundaries of photography as a medium. What characterises their work is the mingling of the familiar and the unsettling, the quotidian and the uncanny.
Alongside their artistic practice, Inez & Vinoodh have, for decades, created influential campaigns for leading fashion houses including Dior, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel and they have photographed some of the world’s biggest stars, such as Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Barack Obama, Brad Pitt and Billie Eilish.
The galleries are arranged thematically, with the tension between reality and artifi ce as a central thread. The seductive and disquieting world they have conceived invites us to consider beauty and authenticity anew, and to question how identity is performed and perceived.
Above all, Inez & Vinoodh imagine photography as the ultimate act of love. In their images, love is not a subject but a force: it fl ows between artist and model, animating the photograph from within. Through four decades of collaboration, experimentation, and shared authorship, Inez and Vinoodh reveal a simple, luminous truth; that love, indeed, can be a photograph.
