The permanent exhibition Discover the Modern turns the spotlight on major, pioneering works by modern artists, in an amazing journey that encompasses paintings, sculptures and models by artists who flouted artistic convention. One of the Kunstmuseum’s most prized exhibits is the magnificent Art Deco building itself. Designed by architect H.P. Berlage, it is striking not only for its distinctive yellow brickwork, but also for its spacious interior, natural light and modern colour scheme. Berlage himself believed this would be his greatest ever work. It was also his last, however, and he never saw his masterpiece completed, as he died a year before the building was finished.

Marie Tak van Poortvliet (1871–1936) and Jacoba van Heemskerck (1876–1923) first met in The Hague at a young age. The ambition, ideals and personal relationship they shared – loving, intellectual and spiritual – pushed the envelope of what was considered socially acceptable at the start of the 20th century. Today, their bond is recognised as a love that had to remain largely hidden in life.

Featuring original costumes from the iconic 1997 film of the same name, as well as never-before-seen garments and accessories from the museum’s collection dating from the 1910s, Titanic & Fashion promises to be a very special, immersive journey. Combined with pieces by contemporary designers such as John Galliano for Maison Margiela, Craig Green, Iris van Herpen and Tess van Zalinge, the exhibition shines a light on the dreamy fashions of over a century ago, while also reflecting on the here and now.

This autumn, the Kunstmuseum Den Haag presents the first European retrospective exhibition of the American painter Lois Dodd (1927) with some 120 works, as announced in The New York Times. Dodd has been active for almost eight decades, during which time she has remained faithful to her own form and style and, at the age of 97, she still paints almost every day.
