Marie Tak van Poortvliet and Jacoba van Heemskerck

Marie Tak van Poortvliet (1871–1936) and Jacoba van Heemskerck (1876–1923) first met in The Hague at a young age. The ambition, ideals and personal relationship they shared – loving, intellectual and spiritual – pushed the envelope of what was considered socially acceptable at the start of the 20th century. Today, their bond is recognised as a love that had to remain largely hidden in life.

Pioneers of modern art

Marie Tak van Poortvliet was a collector, critic and benefactor of the arts. Jacoba van Heemskerck came to be one of the most important expressionist artists of her era. The two shared a deep appreciation for the tenets of theosophy, anthroposophy and biodynamic agriculture. They turned to art, nature and spirituality to find means of making the world a better place.

The exhibition will highlight their international circle , their spiritual beliefs and the context of their era. It will also devote attention to the pair’s involvement with the Berlin avant garde associated with Der Sturm and their controversial political stance  during the first World War.

Mondrian, Marc and Kandinsky

The exhibition presents paintings, drawings and stained-glass works by Van Heemskerck alongside works by Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc from Tak van Poortvliet’s private collection. Upon her death,  she bequeathed her collection to Kunstmuseum Den Haag and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

Touching on issues ranging from feminism and queer identity to sustainability and mental health, the works tell a story that remains unexpectedly relevant today.

Cooperation

This exhibition has been organised in cooperation with Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and was inspired by the release of Alles Gegeven, a biography of Marie Tak van Poortvliet written by Jacqueline van Paaschen and published by Uitgeverij Prometheus.

Pioniers in de moderne kunst

Marie Tak van Poortvliet is kunstverzamelaar, criticus en mecenas. Jacoba van Heemskerck groeit uit tot een van de belangrijkste expressionistische kunstenaars van haar tijd. Samen delen zij een diepe belangstelling voor theosofie, antroposofie en biodynamische landbouw. Via kunst, natuur en spiritualiteit zoeken zij naar manieren om bij te dragen aan een betere wereld.

De tentoonstelling belicht hun internationale netwerk, hun spirituele overtuigingen en de context van hun tijd. Daarbij is ook aandacht voor hun betrokkenheid bij de Berlijnse avant-garde rond Der Sturm en hun omstreden positie tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog.

Mondriaan, Marc en Kandinsky

Schilderijen, tekeningen en glas-in-loodwerken van Van Heemskerck worden gepresenteerd naast werk van kunstenaars als Piet Mondriaan, Wassily Kandinsky en Franz Marc, afkomstig uit de privécollectie van Tak van Poortvliet. Deze collectie schenkt zij uiteindelijk aan Kunstmuseum Den Haag en Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

Met onderwerpen als feminisme, queerness, duurzaamheid en mentaal welzijn blijft hun verhaal verrassend relevant.

Deze tentoonstelling is tot stand gekomen dankzij genereus bruikleen van Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam. 
De tentoonstelling is gebaseerd op het onderzoek van Jacqueline van Paaschen, auteur van de nieuwe biografie Marie Tak van Poortvliet: Alles gegeven. De biografie is te koop in onze museumshop.
