Gustave Caillebotte

An Impressionist and photography

Gustave Caillebotte
Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894) was the éminence grise of the French Impressionist movement. His pioneering work was innovative, daring and uncompromising, since his wealthy family background made it unnecessary for him to pander to the market. As a patron, he also played an important part in ensuring the success of Impressionism. He supported friends like Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir both by purchasing their work and by organizing exhibitions.

Although art historians in France, Britain, the United States and elsewhere have for some time now given Caillebotte the recognition he deserves both as a patron and as an artist in his own right, this exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag in spring 2013 will be the first ever Dutch retrospective of this great artist. The emphasis will be on the reciprocal influences between his painting practice and the emerging art of photography.
