Mix & Match - Barbara Visser

Superposition - In search of the elusive Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven

From 24 January 2026, Kunstmuseum Den Haag presents the first edition of Mix & Match, a new exhibition series in which contemporary makers reflect on the museum’s collection through their own perspective, giving rise to new questions and surprising interpretations. For this first edition of Mix & Match, the museum invites visual artist and filmmaker Barbara Visser. Through the turbulent life and precarious existence of artist and performer Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven (1874–1927), Visser explores the role of women in the art world.

New perspectives on the collection

The starting point of the exhibition is the film Alreadymade, which Visser created about Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, the boundary-breaking Dada artist and performer who was far ahead of her time but fell into obscurity after her death.

At Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Barbara Visser presents this film in combination with works from the collection, including Damesportret by Charley Toorop, Vrouwenkopf by Alexej von Jawlensky, Cadeau by Man Ray, and a bedroom furniture piece designed by Piet Zwart in 1917. Through these works, Visser evokes the resilient and often challenging lives of female artists and models in the early twentieth century. It was a period of radical innovation, yet recognition of women in art and public life was far from self-evident. The exhibition builds on Alreadymade, previously presented by Visser at Kunsthaus Zürich.

Mix & Match – Barbara Visser is on view from 24 January to 5 July 2026.
