Projects Gallery: Jochen Niessen
German artist Jochen Niessen (b. 1959) dramatically reverses the traditional process of painting: he applies the paint first and only then proceeds to the drawing. And he himself has no idea what that drawing will look like – he takes his cue from the chemical reactions that take place between various layers of materials. Niessen applies etching ink over a layer of paint and it is the interaction between the paint and the ink that determines the design that emerges and which Niessen may subsequently emphasise with graphite. Within tightly balanced frameworks, the artist plays with the relationship between texture, form and colour.
