Works on paper

Suze Robertson, Kunstmuseum Den Haag 2025

Intimate depictions of everyday life

Direct and intimate depictions of everyday life, portrayed in charcoal, chalk and pencil. Kunstmuseum Den Haag shows a selection of works on paper by The Hague artist Suze Robertson (1855 - 1922). Quirky as she was for her time, she chose peasants and workers as subjects. Especially women. With raw, powerful and honest lines, the people come to life.

Drawing forms the basis of Robertson's work. She trained as a drawing teacher at the The Hague Academy and also taught at various schools. After which she focuses entirely on her painting. During her lifetime, Robertson already receives much recognition and her work is regularly exhibited at home and abroad. She emerges when the Haagse School sets the tone in the art world and inspires the next generation of artists, such as Piet Mondrian, with her innovative works.
