Mondrian & the journey to abstraction  

How does a tree become a composition of lines? Follow Mondrian's quest for abstraction – a journey that took him ever further from reality. From Laren and Domburg, via Amsterdam and Paris, to London and New York. Wherever he was, Mondrian's search for rhythm in a new visual language, inspired by spirituality, music and dance, remained his inexhaustible driving force. It all culminates in his final and most famous work, Victory Boogie Woogie (1942–1944): the dazzling centrepiece of the exhibition.

Mondrian & the people around him  

Mondrian was closely connected to the world around him. He drew inspiration from fellow artists, and vice versa. His involvement with De Stijl – a movement determined to radically reinvent art and design – was central to his development. Through paintings, furniture, models and even scent, you'll see, feel and smell how Mondrian and his contemporaries shaped an optimistic art for a better future. The exhibition brings together iconic works by, among others, Gerrit Rietveld, Theo van Doesburg and Bart van der Leck. You'll also discover how artists who have long been overlooked – such as Jacoba van Heemskerck and Marlow Moss – had a profound influence on Mondrian's work.

Mondrian & our time  

How do Mondrian's ideas and forms live on in visual art and design today? More than 80 years after his death, his legacy is very much alive – as you'll discover at Kunstmuseum Den Haag.  

Mondrian & The Road to Abstraction is on display at Kunstmuseum Den Haag from 10 October.
