Chasing the Dot by Philip Vermeulen
Explore the line between perception and reality
Step into a world without a horizon, where light, colour and sound completely captivate your gaze. In 'Chasing the Dot', artist Philip Vermeulen demonstrates just how surprising and changeable our perception is. Following it's world premiere at Lowlands, this monumental light and sound installation can be experienced at Kunstmuseum Den Haag from 10 October 2026, as part of the new collection presentation KM (New) Icons.
An artwork that takes shape in your mind
In 'Chasing the Dot', you are surrounded by moving fields of colour, pulsating light and spatial sound. As you continue to look, a dark, floating dot appears right in the centre of your field of vision. The dot is not actually present in the space, but arises within your own perception. Light and sound merge seamlessly. You are not merely looking at the artwork: your eyes, ears and brain complete the experience. As a result, every visitor sees something different.
World premiere at Lowlands
For the world premiere of 'Chasing the Dot', Philip Vermeulen, Kunstmuseum Den Haag and Lowlands are joining forces with 'Chasing the Dot: Ganzfeld = Wavefield'. On 21, 22 and 23 August 2026, the artwork will be presented at Lowlands inside a gigantic dome, which can accommodate around ninety visitors at a time.
About Philip Vermeulen
Philip Vermeulen creates monumental installations in which technology, light, movement and sound come together. He explores how our senses work and how easily our perception can be guided, disrupted or reconstructed.
Vermeulen also refers to his installations as 'hypersculptures': works of art that not only fill the space but also have a physical and sensory impact on the visitor. His work has previously been on view at Museum Voorlinden, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Rijksmuseum Twenthe.
The installation uses intense and rapidly changing light and powerful sound. The experience can therefore be overwhelming.
