Discover Kunstmuseum Den Haag’s iconic Berlage building: human-scale design, radiant light and timeless...
Kunstmuseum Den Haag has a treasure chamber of over 160.000 pieces of art. Here we work on making the highlights from this collection available online.
From the world’s largest Mondrian collection and impressive displays of Delft Blue and Islamic ceramics, to a pre-eminent fashion collection and groundbreaking contemporary art: Kunstmuseum Den Haag oversees, presents, and shares a diverse collection of over 170,000 art and cultural objects collected by the city, for the city. Our approach is polyvocal and (self-)critical, involving partners on the local, national, and international level – both within and beyond our locations and those of our partners, and with a growing presence in the digital world.
With a varied and appealing range of exhibitions, we proactively offer new perspectives on the past, present, and future. Our educational programmes enable us to welcome more than 40,000 students annually. In addition, we are evolving into a production house for public programmes and co-creation, where the many communities that come together in The Hague are able to recognise themselves and feel represented.
We serve roughly 400,000 visitors each year. From the seasoned culture lover to the visitor who discovers the museum for the first time during a special evening event, everyone is welcome. Supported by a committed team of 150 colleagues with diverse backgrounds and expertise, we strive to deliver a unique experience to every visitor, in accordance with hospitality, diversity, and equality.
At the heart of this programming is the iconic museum building, designed by the architect Berlage, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2035. As we approach this milestone, and with our own strengths and histories in mind, we are pursuing new ways to contribute to what our city strives for: promoting peace and justice worldwide. We will do this through a new mission and vision, setting a course determined by optimism, polyvocality, and entrepreneurship.
Beginning from the leading art and cultural collections of the city of The Hague, we produce polyvocal programmes and exhibitions. This occurs both within and beyond our museum premises, in co-creation with partners and artists, locally, nationally, and internationally. Our programming serves a broad audience that includes both residents and visitors to The Hague.
We are a public museum, yet one that is evolving into a place where we cooperatively create culture: a production house, from Art (with a capital A) to craft, and from story or cuisine to groundbreaking youth culture. We operate from the philosophy that tapping the imagination of another, creating and sharing together, enables us to better coexist and contribute to a more positive future.
We choose hope and optimism. As one of the cultural cornerstones in this city of Peace and Justice, we believe that together we can create a more beautiful and just world. Makers play a vital role in this. They show us new realms and connect us in new ways with the past and present, and with one another.
We listen and provide space. Polyvocality is the foundation, ensuring everyone has a seat at the table. We do not simply convey the stories of partners and communities, but speak with and through them. We expose inequality and create space for those whose voices are not heard enough.
We innovate, experiment, and seek new ways to connect art and the public. As a public-private institution, we are devoted to entrepreneurship and purpose. We foster partnerships that open up new possibilities. The museum, after all, is not unchanging. Together we are building the museum of the future.
