The Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and the Chair of History of Architecture and Urban Planning at TU Delft’s Faculty of Architecture have joined hands to launch an award for the best TU Delft graduation project situated at the interface of art and architecture. The prize takes the form of an exhibition based on the winner’s graduation project and held in the Mondrian & De Stijl wing of the Gemeentemuseum. Carlijn Kingma (b. Zutphen, 1991) is the first winner of the New Babylon Award.
Jury chairman and museum director Benno Tempel says: “Like Constant Nieuwenhuys or the artists of De Stijl, Kingma seeks to balance architectural design and visual art. In her work, she creates new worlds in which the current distinctions between art and life fade away. This places her in the tradition of radical thinkers, many of whom are represented in the collection of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. The new award has been established to highlight the way the latest generation of artists and architects are seeking to use design to transform life into art.”
Carlijn Kingma graduated from TU Delft’s Faculty of Architecture this year. In the course of her architectural training, she became interested in the power of utopia. Her drawings and models present it as a place where practical possibility and desire coalesce to produce worlds never previously experienced. Taken as a whole, her graduation project offers an alternative cartography of present-day society and examines our yearning for a ‘Utopia’.
The exhibition Carlijn Kingma – Utopia in sight will run from 21 November 2017 to 26 February 2018.
