100 years of jewellery and silverware
Steltman Jewellers opened in The Hague exactly one hundred years ago. From the start, the ‘Joaillerie Artistique’ (art jewellery shop) placed an emphasis on artistic design. Typical Steltman pieces feature intriguing, eye-catching shapes and stunning workmanship. The exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag showcases art jewellery made by the Steltman company from 1917 to the present, including some pieces with a royal past.
The exhibition will include beautifully carved jade from the interwar years, distinctive Steltman pieces with lotus flower motifs, fantastical and decorative animal figures from the 1950s, and modern designs from later in the century. Special attention will be paid to the lotus flower motif, constantly used and developed by Steltman right through to today. It appears in rings, pendant earrings, cuff links, brooches, tiepins and necklaces.
The various styles and materials employed by the company’s skilled craftsmen over the past hundred years reveal not only how jewellery was influenced by changing fashions, but also the role jewellery played in them. Pieces by Steltman were cherished for generations, sometimes being restyled, and played an important role in family life. The exhibition will include various unique items on loan from private individuals and never previously on show to the public. Faithful clients have lent these pieces especially for this occasion.
Silver for beautifully laid dinner tables and spectacular interiors will also be on show. The highlights include the tea set that Steltman submitted to the famous Exposition Internationales des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925, where it won a bronze medal.
Royal past
The exhibition also includes pieces with a royal past. Steltman has contributed to the jewellery collection of the Dutch royal house over no fewer than six generations; royal commissions have ranged from engagement rings to personal gifts and modifications of older royal pieces. In addition, Steltman Jewellers possesses its own collection of historical jewellery, some of which were once in royal hands. The show in The Hague will include the ring that the Dutch jewellers’ federation presented to Princess Irene for her 21st birthday. Princess Irene collaborated with Steltman on the design of the platinum ring and it features one of her favourite stones: a dark ruby.
De tentoonstelling bevat schitterend gesneden jade uit het interbellum, kenmerkende Steltman-sieraden met Lotusmotieven, fantasierijke en sierlijke dierfiguren uit de jaren 50, en moderne ontwerpen uit de latere periodes. Speciale aandacht is er voor het Lotus-motief, waarvan het basisontwerp tot op de dag van vandaag door Steltman Juwelier wordt voortgezet. Het is verwerkt in ringen, oorhangers, manchetknopen, broches, dasspelden en halssieraden.
De verschillende stijlen en materialen van honderd jaar vakmanschap laten zien hoe het sieraad meebewoog met de mode van de tijd, maar ook de functie die het sieraad daarin aannam. De Steltman-sieraden werden generaties lang gekoesterd, soms vermaakt, en speelden een belangrijke rol in families. Er zijn verschillende bijzondere bruiklenen uit particulier bezit getoond, die nog niet eerder te zien waren.
Aan bod komt ook zilver voor schitterend gedekte tafels of voor een fraai interieur. Tot de topstukken behoort het theeservies dat door Steltman in 1925 werd ingezonden voor de beroemde Exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs et industriels moderneste in Parijs, en waar het werd bekroond met een bronzen medaille.
Koninklijke historie
Hoogtepunten in de tentoonstelling zijn de stukken met een koninklijke historie. Al zes generaties draagt Steltman bij aan de koninklijke juwelencollectie; van verlovingsringen tot persoonlijke cadeaus en aanpassingen aan de koninklijke sieraden. Daarnaast beheert Steltman Juwelier een eigen collectie historische sieraden, waarvan enkele ooit in koninklijke handen waren. In Den Haag wordt onder andere de ring getoond die prinses Irene ontving voor haar 21e verjaardag van de Federatie Goud en Zilver, de brancheorganisatie voor juweliers. Prinses Irene ontwierp de platinaring zelf, samen met Steltman.
